As fellow Texan, I feel that having a SE Bottle Rocket DVD made is imperitive. Without one I am simply lost. Alone in a world with only a regular DVD version of the most inspiring movie for young men living in dull-as-shit Texas.

I propose a box set containing Bottle Rocket, Rushmore, and Royal Tenenbaums (to be released when Royal Tenenbaums alone is released). Criterion did an excellent job with the Rushmore DVD, so I hope to see them work on Bottle Rocket / Royal Tenenbaums.

I’m just dying to give my hard-earned money to the first company that produces a special-feature-laden version of Bottle Rocket, and so are all these other people! I already have the vanilla version, but it sure looks puny compared to my Criterion Rushmore. Please, please, please… I need commentary from Wes and Owen, behind the scenes photos, the original short, documentaries and production notes and deleted scenes… Hook us up, man! And while you’re at it, a similarly generous treatment of The Royal Tenenbaums would be greatly appreciated.

Knoxville, TN USA - Thursday, February 28, 2002 at 20:51:10 (CST)

The care and thought that was put into the Rushmore DVD by Criterion set a standard for future releases. It is imperative that BR be given the same treatment. Wes Anderson is the contemporary equivolent of Jean Renoir, it is important to have quality releases of his work.

Simply because “Bottle Rocket” is Anderson’s first venture does not mean it does not deserve the acclaim and attention given to his later films. The addition of the original short film of “Bottle Rocket” on the DVD would be especially exciting.

Andrew Harrington
Los Angeles, CA USA - Thursday, February 21, 2002 at 14:42:10 (CST)

The Rushmore Criterion Collection is probably the most pain-stakingly creative DVD I have ever experienced. Granted I have not experienced many, and my partiality does lean towards Rushmore, but nevertheless it seems that it was put together with a lot of care by the film makers themselves. So obviously they have to do this with Bottle Rocket and The Royal Tenenbaums when it comes out, and every other film these guys make from now on. The standard has been set with the Criterion Collection, and Bottle Rocket is a great film and deserves the same creative packaging. So Wes, Owen, dig up your auditon tapes and behind the scenes footage, the short film, and anything else, and get it out there.

Wes Anderson has answered our prayer of someday having another comedic mastermind after Woody Allen. His first feature, “Bottle Rocket” is most definitely underrated at the moment. Please PLEase PLEASE!! We need a Criterion Collection DVD - as all of Anderson’s films deserve. “Bottle Rocket” is quickly becoming a well known modern classic and with the sucess of “The Royal Tenenbaums” more people will want to seek out Wes Anderson & Owen Wilson’s seminal work. The original short film should absolutely be included. The fascination people have with filmmaking will lead them to the DVD *specifically* because we will be able to witness the progression of that film from short to feature length film. Luke and Owen Wilson, and Wes Anderson have become quite well known and many of their fans will go out of their way to get any extra interviews with them. I know I will. Why not put together a Wes Anderson Package with all three of his films sold together!!! That would be fantastic. Sooo many people are waiting for this DVD.

Wes Anderson is the best thing to happen to American cinema in decades. He is a true original, and all three of his films deserve the ultimate DVD treatment. Criterion has already done a wonderful job on Rushmore (I watch that disc at least once a month) and Bottle Rocket would be a wonderful addition to the Collection. In fact, Criterion should simultaneously release DVDs of Bottle Rocket and The Royal Tenenbaums, Anderson’s newest classic. As others have said, the BR disc should contain a commentary by Anderson and Owen Wilson (Luke, too, if possible), the original short film, deleted scenes, modern-day interviews with the cast and crew… and whatever else you can come up with! This baby will SELL.

12.01.01 BOTTLE ROCKET

A reader sends in this great bit of news: “At a screening of The Royal Tenenbaums at Lincoln Center, writer/director Wes Anderson mentioned that both his first feature film, Bottle Rocket, and Tenenbaums would be getting DVD releases under the Criterion Collection banner. There’s no word on when we could expect these, but he did mention that they hope to get started on Bottle Rocket ‘real soon’”.

Rushmore has been the formative movie in my film experience. Because of it, and because of the Royal Tenenbaums, I want to give my life to the art of film. Many directors point to Orsen Welles and Citizen Kane as their inspiration to live a life of film. For me, it was Wes Anderson, and his first film, named by Martin Scorcese the seventh greatest movie of the nineties (this man made Taxi Driver. He made Raging Bull.) is Bottle Rocket — a movie that threw off my line of thought more than 2001: A Space Odessey did for people of its day. This movie set Wes Anderson’s world stage, and Wes Anderson has proven himself the greatest film maker in a generation. The Criterion Collection should be drooling to add this movie to its outstanding list, which, most laudably, contatins Rushmore.
Casey Creel
Greensboro, North Carolina USA - Sunday, January 13, 2002 at 01:53:07 (CST)

the artistry of wes anderson and owen wilson rightfully deserve respect and neccessary attention in the form of what would be a special edition DVD. An avid fan of the wilson clan and other anderson films I claim that such an investment be made in favor of the films’ milestone in american culture. Not such a movie has been made since the inception of Ferris Bueller’s day OFF. This film deserves a DVD director’s commentary among other footnotes and trinkets of the film’s posterity. Ultimately, the fate of genius lies in your hands.

Making a quality BottleRocket DVD is a ‘win-win’ situtation, all the fans will buy one making them happy, ensuring a profit making the DVD producer happy. Three things the DVD must have for me to buy it is- 1)the orginal full-length script; 2) the orginal 13min B.R. short 3) a version of the B.R. feature that incorporates all the deleted footage orginally shot in mind for the 300 page script; don’t say #3 can’t be done, because they did it for the RushHour 2 DVD. nuff said~ Future Man

I don’t think anyone could disagree that Wes Anderson is an important new filmmaker of this age. Bottle Rocket itself tanked at the Box Office but found a life on video. It’s only logical to indulge the cinematic genius of Mr.’s Anderson and Wilson while tapping the great resources of young wealthy cineastes. It’s win-win, I think.

I believe Wes Anderson to be at the forefront of current important directors, and in my opinion, one of the most interesting ones. I am a huge fan of Criterion DVDs, and Rushmore is my favorite. I own the current Bottle Rocket DVD and am disappointed each time I watch it because there is no commentary or other extras to accompany what is an excellent and oft overlooked piece of filmmaking. I urge Criterion to consider releasing Bottle Rocket and further its wonderful tradition.
Tommy Hernandez
New York, New York USA - Wednesday, December 05, 2001 at 15:26:46 (CST)

But of course there MUST be a Criterion release of Bottle Rocket!!
Generally Criterion sticks to a pattern of releasing all (or at least the major) films of certain directors, and as they chose Wes Anderson for Rushmore, it’s only natural that they release Bottle Rocket as well.
May I remind you, you higher-ups at Criterion, that you had the gall to release The Rock and Armageddon (THESE FILMS ARE NOT ART, PEOPLE —– were you paid off by Jerry Bruckheimer and/or Michael Bay, or WHAT????).
Make up for it by releasing Bottle Rocket.
Thank you very much.

Genius, that rare bird, only fleetingly graces us with it’s presence. It is found in Bottle Rocket, as well as Rushmore (natch). It is not every day a director like Wes Anderson comes along. He had solidified him self as a major director in the film industry. He should be commended by giving his first film, “Bottle Rocket” the attention it deserves. If not for Wes, then for the fans.

Wes Anderson is by far my favorite director of all time. I bought both versions of Rushmore; his film are that important to me, and countless other film buffs. A new edition with more features, like the original short or a commentary track would allow film students and fans like me to get closer to one their favorite films. Please make one of my dreams come true. In light of both Wes Anderson’s and Owen Wilson’s rise in popularity, I’m sure a new edition would sell. Thank you very much.

We not only an enhanced
Bottle Rocket DVD, we need to start having Rushmore/Bottle Rocket-based conventions, theme parties, religions. These two movies are certainly worthy to build your whole life around. Bottle Rocket is by far the most deserving DVD candidate outside of the Star Wars trilogy, myself and many others are waiting anxiously for this treatment to be redone. Bottle Rocket will probably turn out to be one of the most important films of all time, in its own way: the debut of a director who, years and years from now(maybe sooner) will be recognized as one of the giants of cinema, mentioned in the same breath with such masters as Jean Renoir. I really don’t think that’s overstating it. We need a special edition.

A criterion version of BR, or at least one with ‘extras’, is an essential need. Wes Anderson is one of the most important young filmmakers of the his generation, and if we don’t treat him as such we are only doing ourselves a diservice. I can say that not only would an enormous amount ofpeople turn in their current copy of BR for a fully loaded one. Not only that many have not purchased a Bottle Rocket DVD in anticipation of the eventual release of a more comprehensive version.

Would it help if I say “Please!!”? These two films (feature and short!) deserve to be out on a CRITERION DVD, however limited the edition, however unlimited the price. They will be bought. Be it for this wonderful moment alone: “You in the army, yes?” - “No, no. I just have short hair.” I need to have this in pristine widescreen quality and supported by a deeper analysis (yes, a filmmakers commentary) on meaning and evolution of this pinnacle of cinematic achievement. Exactly. So don t make me pull some strings with the administration or make you an offer you can t refuse! It won t hurt that bad.
Sincerely,

When an important artist begins his work, he does so in obscurity. But does his early work deserve less scrutiny than the later? Not to my mind, not at all. It deserves more. And time is ticking away for Bottle Rocket. Memories fade, recollections (for commentary’s sake) become less poigniant. Footage that hits the edit room floor is lost more quickly. There must be an effort to archive the first work of the next truly great voice in American comedy. DVD is a wonderful format that is providing a future not only for the images, but the thoughts of the creators, and perhaps more intriguing, the collaborators that really flesh out the film making.

Wes Anderson is exploding into the film industry as the most celebrated director. Bottle Rocket is his greatest film to some, and deserves a pristine quality DVD release that honors this film. An almost mandatory requirement is the original 13 minute short created as the inspiration to the presently well known feature Bottle Rocket.

A special edition Bottle Rocket DVD would be great because, along with The Royal Tenenbaums, I would then have TWO treasures to wait impatiently for. Still, I understand why a Special Bottle Rocket might not come into being anytime soon, and I’m sure that poor Wes is tired of being hounded by complete strangers about the subject, but I guess that there’s no harm in wishful thinking…

This petition, although it is well-intended, has it’s heart in the wrong place. When have Wes, Owen & Co. ever let us down? They are extremely hard workers and, just like any great artist, they know what their audience wants. Wes has heard it a thousand times: “Give us the short, Give us the short!” All I can say is ‘all in good time.’ Be patient fellow appreciators of fine film.

I have seen a LOT of movies, and I’m very critical. Bottle Rocket is one of the best films ever made, and it is certainly my #1 favorite. Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson stand apart from other filmmakers in their sharpness and originality. Surely this film deserves better treatment than “The Mummy”! Wes and Owen are my heros. I viewed Bottle Rocket on VHS my junior year of college. It inspired me. It’s humor opened a new door in my head and essentially framed social absurdities that I was surrounded by. After you fail to be a professional athelete or rock star, what else is there to be? A gangster. To me this satirized many real life characters I knew and I identified with the energetic desire to do something special and the frustrated lack of a clear goal. I still do. I have taken courses at the North West film institute in screen writing and have turned to writing for a creative outlet. I credit Bottle Rocket’s fresh simplitic audacity as an arrow that led to a path that delivered creativity. I would purchase a criterion version of the film. It’s brilliance is grossly underappreciated.

I would love to see a special edition of Botle Rocket. Wes Anderson id probably the best film maker of his generation , just ask Martin Scorsese he voted it one of his 10 favorite films of the 90s. Ditto to all the above.

Wes Anderson has staying power, and Bottle Rocket special edition sales will certaily be fueled (pardon the pun) by the release of his third film this winter. It’s a truly great film, he’s a truly great director, and pretty soon what was a strong cult following will become mass appreciation.

To whom it may concern. If you don’t think there is a market and Bottle Rocket doesn’t have a following you are sorely mistaken. I and many of my friends have embraced Anderson’s masterpiece. Please I would love to see the original.

I just saw Bottle Rocket again (on VHS) for the first time in years, and I was reminded of the sheer brilliance of that film. Were you to release a Special Edition DVD, I would buy 10 copies and give them all to my unelightened friends and family.

i would love to see a release of bottle rocket like this criterion version of rushmore. it is the first movie that all the wilson brothers are in together and it is such a great film. i would like to see the short b&w version of bottle rocket that came out before the movie, as well as commentary by wes, and the wilsons. this is definately one of my favorite movies and i would buy such a version on DVD.
thanks

If one film deserves a good DVD release it’s Bottle Rocket. The current DVD with a chapter selection being the biggest special feature is pathetic for such a good film. Some special features that would be good on the disc would be the Bottle Rocket short, Trailers/Tv Spots, Commentary by Wes Anderson, Luke Wilson, Owen Wilson,Cast&Crew Biographies, Production Notes, and Storyboards.

The brillance of Bottle Rocket can only be full appreciated if the whole story is shown on a special edition DVD. The commentary, storyboards, script, and first short would make the experience of watching the film much more enjoyable.

It is understandable that there might be reservations about releasing a feature-laden DVD to a film that performed so poorly commercially. However, over the last 5 years, Bottle Rocket and Wes Anderson have developed a substantial cult following. There are a number of us out there (including many in Hollywood) who worship Mr. Anderson’s beautiful first film with a passion. Mr. Anderson’s ever-growing fan base would certainly be interested in purchasing such an item. After all, Touchstone Pictures and Jeff Wells of the Internet column Hollywood Confidential are touting Mr. Anderson’s new, star-powered film The Royal Tenenbaums as a Best Picture front-runner, with the certain possibility of Wes Anderson being named as Best Director in such a situation. If this were to occur, Mr. Anderson would be the new breakout star of American cinema. Capitalizing on such an occurrence would be wise indeed.
I know there is a strong constituent (myself included) who would desperately like to see the original short upon which the feature Bottle Rocket was based and hear any analytical comments from Mr. Anderson himself, whether they come in the form of a video interview or an audio commentary track. Another possible feature to include may be a DVD-ROM feature with access to the original 300 page script. Also, if Criterion is interested in doing so, they may approach Martin Scorsese on providing an audio commentary to the film. Mr. Scorsese has expressed great love for the film, labeling it one of his ten favorites of the 1990s and Mr. Anderson himself the “next Scorsese.” I am aware that Mr. Scorsese has provided critical audio accompaniment to some of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s films on the Criterion series, and being than Wes Anderson has noted that he is indebted to those filmmakers, a Martin Scorsese audio track makes perfect logistic sense.
Mies van der Rohe once said that God is in the details and the same can be said for Wes Anderson’s films. Any fan of his will tell you that they demand repeat viewing to catch all of their rich idiosyncrasies, furthering fueling the need for a proper version of Bottle Rocket for home viewing. Bottle Rocket continues to be of the 500 best-selling DVDs on the Amazon sales charts. The interest still exists, and so does the opportunity for a special-edition DVD to succeed.
In conclusion, producing a special-edition DVD for Bottle Rocket would be a low-maintenance, low-cost, and highly advantageous enterprise from an economic and artistic perspective because of the film’s enormous following, lauded distinction, and immense replay value.

If a special edition of Bottle Rocket were to come out early next year, it could capitalize on the success of The Royal Tenenbaums. It would be very appealing to fans gained from Tenenbaums, much more so than a DVD with only the movie on it.

Bottle Rocket has long been ignored. The time has come for it to finally get the respect it rightly deservers. I support this petition, and wish to have a special edition of BR. And, if possible, the original, mythical 18 minute short should be included. Thank you.
