Petition: Criterion Collection Darjeeling Limited

We, the undersigned, respectfully ask Fox and the Criterion Collection to release a Criterion edition of The Darjeeling Limited. All of Wes Anderson’s other films have received (Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou) or will receive (Bottle Rocket) the Criterion treatment. TDL, the most recent film of this contemporary auteur, deserves the same.

Signed,

it would actually sell on DVD if there was a criterion. the current edition is not complete (like the first/only edition of bottle rocket). Criterion would give an audio commentary, more behind the scenes, a booklet and art work from eric anderson.

yes i agree. this movie would make way more money if it was a criterion dvd.

Just like many others petitioners I too have all of Anderson’s films on Criterion. It would be an easy buy for me. I felt that Darjeeling was one of the most liberating film last year and deserves the Criterion treatment.

I have all of Anderson’s films on Criterion and am severely dissapointed that Darjeeling Limited was not released as a Criterion dvd. I felt that the film was among his best and deserves to be part of the collection. At this point I am severely dissapointed with the dvd market as a whole, and am begging the people who have some say in this matter to, for once, stop thinking about money and start thinking about the art of filmmaking. This travesty ranks up there with Armageddon and The Rock, but for the opposite reason of course.

  89. Drew Lewison 19 May 2008 at 7.40 pm link comment

Did not want to at first, seeing that if Lynch or Kubrick (even Herzog) is not on the criterion collection, then Anderson shouldn’t either. But after seeing Darjeeling…man, it knocked me out of the water. Yes, it should be on the collection. Though that gives it no excuse it from hiking the price up like all those Bergman films. $40.00? I guess that’s the price to pay from such great art…

The Darjeeling Limited definitely needs the Criterion treatment. To me, this is Anderson’s most sophisticated and striking film, not to mention, probably the most interesting to film. The paltry extra features on the FOX dvd are not enough to do this movie justice.

I briefly spoke with Wes Anderson after a round-table interview fall of last year. He said to expect a studio DVD release of Darjeeling first, and then a Criterion release later this year… hopefully the same time as Bottle Rocket?

But yeah, a Wes Anderson DVD isn’t a Wes Anderson DVD until it’s released through Criterion.
