Reports that Owen Wilson attempted suicide and remains hospitalized in Los Angeles have thrown plans to market Wilson's latest movie, The Darjeeling Limited, into limbo, Newsweek magazine observed on its website today (Thursday). Chris Thilk of the online Movie Marketing Madness told the magazine, "This is going to have a tremendous impact on the film's marketing. ... If you take Wilson out of the mix, it's not just the loss of a leading man, it would severely impact the movie's brand identity." It is generally assumed that, should Wilson agree to promote the film, interviewers would almost certainly focus on his reported suicide attempt and ignore the movie itself. Longtime celebrity publicist Howard Bragman told Newsweek that if Wilson does agree to do an interview, he should give one only to a high-profile TV show like Today, then dismiss other questions about the matter by telling reporters that he's already addressed it and wants to move on.

Less than a week after his suicide attempt, Owen Wilson is back at home – and being watched around the clock.

"Owen is in bad mental shape but said he is thankful to be alive," says a source close to the actor, who had returned to his Santa Monica home on Saturday. "He knows he came close to ending his life, and he is happy that he was saved from himself. He is basically at home with people watching him 24/7."

Wilson's rep declined to comment.

Wilson, 38, was hospitalized Aug. 26 after what a police log called an "attempt suicide." He spent the next several days at Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with constant visits from brothers Andrew and Luke Wilson, his parents and such friends as Wes Anderson and Woody Harrelson.

Wilson, who had been due to begin promoting his next film, The Darjeeling Limited at the Venice Film Festival this week, also dropped out of his next movie project, Tropic Thunder. The comedy was set to begin shooting this month, and would have paired Wilson with longtime pal Ben Stiller.

Wilson's Ex Stunned by Suicide Bid
Owen Wilson's ex-girlfriend is still struggling to come to terms with the fact the movie star tried to take his own life. Australian fashion designer Stephanie Conley briefly dated the You, Me And Dupree star in 2005, and insists she's still close to Wilson. She admits she was stunned when she heard the news her ex had been hospitalised in Los Angeles after attempting suicide at his home in Santa Monica, California on Sunday. Speaking to the Sydney Daily Telegraph, Conley says, "I am terribly upset about the situation. I was totally shocked to hear about it and I'm still struggling to understand what went wrong." She reveals she had holidayed with Wilson in Europe just a month ago and found the actor to be in very high spirits. She adds, "He was having such an amazing time. Obviously something has gone very wrong in his personal life since then but he was so happy - I just don't understand." Since splitting from Wilson, Conley has dated Naomi Watts' brother Ben.

Actor Owen Wilson is recovering well from his alleged suicide attempt, and is back to cracking jokes, the director of his new film said today.

Hollywood star Wilson was due to appear at the Venice Film Festival for the world premiere of his latest comedy The Darjeeling Limited. Instead he sent a message saying he wished he could be there.

At the beginning of a press conference to discuss the film, director Wes Anderson - one of Wilson's close friends - spoke about the actor.

Anderson said: "Before we start I just want to take a moment to say how excited I am to have a film showing here in Venice, it means a great deal to me and it also means a great deal to Owen, who wants me to express to you how excited he is to have a movie here.

"He wishes he could be here in Venice with all of you now. We all miss having him here with us.

"Obviously he has been through quite a lot this week. I can tell you he has been doing very well, he has been making us laugh. When he's ready he's going to speak for himself much better than any of us could. He has got a very good way with words.

"In the meantime, I would like to ask you to help us to protect his privacy and to respect his wishes."

Wilson's co-stars Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman and Bill Murray were in Venice to promote The Darjeeling Limited without him.

The comic tale tells the story of three brothers - Wilson, Schwartzman and Brody - who set off on a train journey across India.

Wilson plays the older brother, Francis, who organises the trip in a bid to lead the trio on a spiritual quest and heal their fractured relationship.

Brody recalled how Wilson was great fun to work with on the film.

"Owen has a tremendous sense of humour and he's very mischievous. I would say it was a brotherly thing, we were constantly trying to get into trouble and trip each other up. It was really a pleasure to work with him. He's also an incredibly talented actor," Brody said.

"It was an incredible experience working with Owen and Jason. I didn't feel like I was working on this film - we worked hard, all of us, but it was a life experience for me. Sharing it with these guys was really special and I will not forget it."

The film has proved one of the hits of the festival and the stars were cheered as they arrived. It is in competition for the Golden Lion award for best picture.

Wilson was taken to hospital on August 26 after reportedly cutting his wrists at his Santa Monica home. He was found by his brother, Andrew.

His lawyer has denied reports that the actor also took a drug overdose.

Wilson was discharged on Saturday and is recuperating at home.

According to reports, the actor was upset over his split from Kate Hudson.

Singer Courtney Love has also claimed British comic Steve Coogan is to blame for leading Wilson astray with his party lifestyle. A furious Coogan hit back by branding her accusations "unhelpful and hurtful" and said he was taking legal advice.

The actor was due at the Venice Film Festival to publicize his and Anderson's new movie The Darjeeling Limited. Speaking from the event, Anderson says, "We all miss having him here very much right now. Obviously he's been through quite a lot this week, but I can tell you that's he doing very well and making us laugh, and when he's ready he's going to speak for himself much better than any of us could. He's got a very good way with words." Wilson and Anderson were Oscar-nominated in 2002 for their screenplay for The Royal Tenenbaums.
