Hey all:

This feature was in yesterday's Calendar section of the LA Times. I don't think their stories stay online long, so have at it:

Got it. Thank you, ILIS!

I was skimming through it while I printed it off, and I was reading about his non-laidbackness [sic], and going, "Ew. I do that. That too."

You all already knew I'm neurotic, right? :\

A clock-watcher, I'm the same way, so I don't wear a watch. Otherwise it controls me.

Harry Dean Stanton being in TWBS is news (to me). Interesting. Owen's gonna be busy flying betwixt Rome and Austin, TLA and TWBS will be shooting at the same time.

Shit, next year is gonna kick ass with all these movies. I can't wait.

Thanks for the link! <p><!--EZCODE HR START--><hr /><!--EZCODE HR END-->"Sometimes I stop and think how strange this all is. Something that began as a little idea in Austin, that Wes and I just walked around talking about between ourselves, has turned into all this."</p>

This year sucks for movies, doesn't it? Sparse sparse sparse. <p><!--EZCODE HR START--><hr /><!--EZCODE HR END-->"I'm losing my fucking mind. Use contractions, goddammit. You sound like an alien." - Dave Eggers</p>

yes, it does, totally.

I have a query for the detail-nazis in this group. remember how in a recent article, Owen was all pissed off (rightly) that Sundance is sort of 'taking credit' for Bottle Rocket even thought it wasn't screened there?

This article says:
<!--EZCODE QUOTE START--><blockquote><strong><em>Quote:</em></strong><hr>The 13-minute short was shown at the 1992 Sundance Film Festival and, with backing from big-time filmmakers such as James L. Brooks ("Broadcast News" ;) , released by Columbia Pictures as a feature film four years later<hr></blockquote><!--EZCODE QUOTE END-->

so maybe that's what they're taking credit for -- giving us a first glimpse?

You know, I can't imagine what that was all about with BR at last year's show. But.

On the one hand, I think that it's possible whoever cut together that montage saw Bottle Rocket while researching Sundance, and assumed it was the feature, not the short. Who knows how such a difference could be overlooked, but they're not Racers, and regular folks make mistakes. ;)

Also, it's possible that that editor knows and loves BR and was getting those clips on the reel. Look how tough it is for us to get a decent copy of the short. Maybe it's all s/he had access to for the thingie.

Maybe it was a little dig. We can't possibly know.

But the fact that a talking-head was all, "Bottle Rocket!" just made it feel like a respect thing, for Wes and Owen's nomination. I was totally irritated by the inference that the BR feature played at Sundance, when we all know Sundance's rejection of the feature actually wounded Wes and Owen a little, certainly disillusioned them. But I think you're probably right about the snaps to Sundance; however sour the grapes might have been in 1996, they were pretty sweet in 1994.

I wonder who owns the rights to the short, exactly? Maybe Columbia gave the Academy permission to clip the feature because Wes and Owen refused it. Anything's possible.

Speculate, speculate, speculate. :)

<!--EZCODE BOLD START--><strong>Edit myself back on topic:</strong><!--EZCODE BOLD END--> I just read the article all the way through. My gosh, I think Luke and I share the same brain in some ways. I take a little comfort in that. Just a little. <p><!--EZCODE HR START--><hr /><!--EZCODE HR END-->"I'm losing my fucking mind. Use contractions, goddammit.
