Why is it that Richie Tenenbaum (Luke Wilson) is wareing sunglasses while shaving.
I mean have you heard of someone wearing sunglasses while shaving ............. maybe it's because its just that kind of movie ...... DIFFERENT. Thats what makes it so great.
Any thoughts??? - Truffautfan
EDIT: I changed the name of this thread. Why? Becuase if for some reason, someone wants to look for it later, the other title had no hint of the topic idea...

he was going to kill himself, so it didn't matter. Or he just didn't want to look at his disheveled, broken self in the mirror.
but on practical notes, maybe the mirror light was too bright.

He takes off his glasses before he starts shaving, but after he cuts his hair.
I think the sunglasses are in fact symbolic. He takes them off when he feels vulnerable at most points in the movie. In other words, he's hiding behind them.
Hence, why he takes them off.
That is such a poignant scene.
-John D. Moore

They may be prescription sunglasses, and anyone with a serious need for glasses or contacts knows how annoying it is to shave with them off.
My DVDs

right, because the most important thing at that point was to get the best shave possible.
he didn't care about his hair. it was just something he had control over.
Dudley Heinsbergen: You wanna play some word games, or do some experiments on me or anything?

There is nothing worse than a bad shave. All this hair poking out of the side of his cheek. I think Richie was a character that liked to do it right. ;)
My DVDs

Wes or maybe Luke says something somwhere about the glasses being about Richie wanting to shut the world out, to hide behind. I think it wuld make perfect sense that he'd leave them on while attempting suicide.

By the way, I love Luke's extensive interview on the DVD. It sounds like because he was working with Wes longer than anyone on it, he got the most attached. Plus he had to grow all that hair & beard, unlike the others who just put on wigs then ran off to other acting assignments.

I was wondering how Richie got a razor. He doesnt shave and he is in Raleighs bathroom but Raleigh doesnt shave and Dudley seems to young to shave and Margot probably gets her legs waxed at the salon place they show her at when they introduce them 20 years later.

Baumer! (Two-handed, mock-shooting greeting.) Welcome to the Board!

I bumped a Needle in the Hay thread for you. And you're right: Margot totally is a "wax" kind of girl.

"There's a lot to be said for making people laugh.
