Hi, Hi. I have theories as too why, however at the moment I wish solely to list my conclusions.
All the characters represent a specific animal:

1. Royal - Lion (king of the jungle/family)
2. Ethel - Bird (empty nest, has a beak, feathers)
3. Richie - Wolf (loner, beard)
4. Pagoda - Elephant (carries the king on his back, Indian)
5. Margot - Fox (sly, hot, wears a fox skin)
4. Henry - Bear (king of the woods, insulted as "buck")
5. Chaz (and twin sons) - Dog (security/ watch dog (pets))
6. Eli - Wildcat (western, crazy, more sociable than the wolf)
7. Raleigh (Bloom) - Owl (fulfills Margot's lesbianic desires)
8. Dudley - Mouse (lab rat, colorblind, good hearing)

Whad'ya think?

Welcome to the Board, dimdown!

Veeeerrrry interesting first post! And interesting theory.

The only one I don't get is Owl=fullfilling lesbian desires. Care to elaborate?

Mandingo. I grock your mouth music. -- The Tick

Sure:
Well there is that monatge of her having a rather prolific sexual life that includes the shot with a woman on a balcony (looks like Tuscany) kissing. This is not just comic relief. Royal and Margot are never really reconciled in the movie and this might be because she doesn't need him, she finds herself within the nest of her mother, Ethel. So it makes sense both that she digs girls and that she choose to marry Raleigh. Raleigh is in almost every sense exactly like Ethel: both natural scientists, both obsessed with children and both want to provide a nest for Margot. Margots attraction for Raleigh is his motherly nature. That is why the line "You've made a cuckold out of me." Is the perfect line - Both Raleigh and Ethel, defined by their different bird-like characteristics, are made cuckolds by Margot and by Royal.

very interesting. so are you saying that Margot is a victim of Freud's theory, that one falls in love with someone who resembles their parents? that make sense, because she never made a connection with a father figure. but i don;t think that makes her a lesbian. sure she "experimented" but she definitely had sex with a lot of guys (shown by the whole "Judy is a punk" scene) but i like all of the other "animal" conjectures you have made.
