I'm sure this has been discussed before, but does anyone know why Richie says "Tomorrow" when he talks about killing himself? That's really the only thing in the film that bothers me, because then he does it right then. Please help.

I watched TRT last with commentary. Wes said that it was almost as if Richie made up his mind to actually to it right after he says "I am going to kill myself tomorrow". To me it seems that Richie was never intent on attempting suicide... that is, until he said this line. So, in hearing himself say this perhaps he then figured that he really did want to kill himself and then decided to do it promptly.

I am not sure if this thought was written out correctly or if it helps. For me, that line is one of my favorites. That scene is a pinnacle part of the film.

There's a huge thread about all of this somewhere. I'll go bump it.

hey guys, I've been reading for awhile but this is my first post. One the commentray Wes actually says that it was a line from a french movie I believe. He used it, though contends that in that scene it is in fact the richie decides to do it immediately after making that statement. Hope that helps any.

I agree with ballpark that it seems like it was after he said the line he realised he really did want to do it then and there. I think the flashback montage is especially relevant in this, as it's a surge of his emotions in the instant he decides to do it. I think it's really effective, and I posted a breakdown of the scene a while back, have bumped it for anyone interested.

It's clear that Margot is one of the main factors in this, as he remembers their times together as children. Royal and Etheline's divorce is also prominent, but the most interesting one is Mordecai probably. The image of him flying recurs alongside Margot - and this next comment is one I'm supposed to be avoiding in my academic studies but here I can throw caution to the wind ;) - and maybe he yearns for a freedom from all these worries that he sees in Mordecai flying? I like it anyway. <p>=== Leela, save me! And yourself I guess... and my banjo... and Fry!

If you listen to the commentary, Wes says exactly which French film it is. A lot of the film's best lines and scenes are tributes to other films, second only to the suicide scene, is the scene where Eli drops out of Margot's window, and his reaction to Royal yelling "I know you Asshole!" . . . I can't say I've ever seen any of the films that are referenced, but some of my favorite scenes come from them. <p>"Did you do it because of me?"

"Yeah, but it's not your fault."</p>

"I know you, asshole!" is from Witness, with Harrison Ford. <p><!--EZCODE HR START--><hr /><!--EZCODE HR END-->Mandingo. I grock your mouth music. -- The Tick</p>
