I've never read a better book than this.

I just finished it last week!

Man, this book is about <!--EZCODE ITALIC START--><em>everything.</em><!--EZCODE ITALIC END--> Love, sex, family, gender, war, country. . . it's got it all! And what a terrific first line:

"I was born twice: first, as a baby girl, on a remarkably smogless Detroit day in January of 1960; and then again, as a teenage boy, in an emergency room near Petoskey, Michigan, in August of 1974." <p>"Reach out! Take a chance. Get hurt, even. Play as well as you can. Go, team, GO! Give me an "L"! Give me an "I"! Give me a "V"! Give me an "E"! L-I-V-E, LIVE! Otherwise, you got nuthin' to talk about in the locker room." -Ruth Gordon, Harold and Maude</p>

Yeah, this is the same guy who wrote Virgin Suicides. (Which I've been meaning to read forever, and haven't.)

It's a hella big book. Pretty fast read, but I think it has over 600 pages. (I'd tell you 'xactly, but I lent out my copy yesterday.) <p>"Reach out! Take a chance. Get hurt, even. *** "Breaking" news is that the book just won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for fiction! more incentive to read it.

it really was fantastic, I really felt like I knew all these people, when Desdemona was upset I was upset, When Lefty was sad I was sad. The only part that kinda lost me was Callie/Cal's road trip and excursion in San Francisco. But the rest more than made up for it.

BTW, what do you guys think happened to the obscure object?

I loved this book - I read it as soon as it came out in hardback over a year ago and have added it my annual re-read which also includes TVS. Eugenides has such a gift for exposition, I can't wait to see what he does next.
