I just read the book for the first time. I loved it. One of the best books I have ever read.

I read the book during my freshman year in high school and I sort of credit it as the book that moved me to pursue literature as a hobby.

Salinger was so ahead of his time. God knows how many writers (and filmmakers) he has influenced.

I remember reading it over summer vacation one year. I read most of it in one night because I just couldn't put it down.

I drove to J.D. Salinger's house once because it was on the way to Canada to go skiing. Found the directions on the internet some time ago. My friends and I met a girl at this diner in Cornish who said her father used to do odd jobs for ol' Jerome.

i think i've read it maybe three times.i love but i had to stop reading it so much because it infects your brain somehow and you start feeling really cynical.

I can't even begin to think about knowing how to answer that question.

It certainly did this for me. After reading it my first year of high school, I became a complete cynical introvert. I would literally spend entire days at school without saying a word because I was so disgusted by everything around me. I've become much more opened-minded since then, however.

One thing that has irked me a little is when people like Catcher in a cool sense. I know Holden is a very cult-ish character, but it makes me feel bad when all these talky, outgoing, seemingly-fine-with-society people say they are such big fans.

Yeah, I know where you're coming from on your last point, Sunset. You kinda wonder if they really understood it...

It's been a long while since I read Catcher, but the first time it was on a family trip, I think maybe I was around 14 or 15, and I would not put it down. I refused to get out of the car whenever we would stop to see the sights because I was reading it, I loved it so much. I remember feeling like, "yes, this guy gets it. Why isn't he real? We'd be best friends." I pretty much fell in love with Holden.

well, uh...we fucking stole it man
Edited by: blinuet at: 1/20/05 7:55 pm

I wonder how many people don't feel like Holden sometimes, though. It's pretty "normal" to feel isolated and misunderstood at his age, isn't it?

Mom... Dad... I love you. Please don't sell me to Paris Hilton!

Hah, I love that book... but we read it in English this year, and my Teacher completely ruined it for me. She did a reading of the first chapter in front of the class, and used a voice like a 20s gangster/rebellious teenager from the musical Grease... it was awful. This one girl kept on saying, "the ducks are stupid." and the teacher kept on telling us what a sad character Holden was and how confused he is. It was gross.
Skiddly... Skiddly.-Eli

I first read the book very recently...late last summer actually.

I thought it was a very good book and I read it in two nights (now before you go...woah this kid is slow...I prefer reading a chapter a day or two or three...if I could I would read alot per day but I find it very exciting reading a little bit of the book then waiting for the next part the next day...that's how good a book can be) and I really liked it. I almost read it again but I moved on to another book (Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk if you are wondering)...I'll probably be reading it again some other time...probably soon.

In response to both Dalmationmous and Sunsetjones: I feel for you Dalmation. Even though I have a good english teacher I have had some bad ones in the past that read in a very annoying way. The kids talking in class is horrible too. Especially when 90% of the class is full of people that don't a:know how to read and b:don't like to read. I tell them about certain books and they just look at me and laugh and go back talking about something stupid like relationships and the current pop culture.

As you can tell I am cynical towards most of my age group...is it because of Catcher In the Rye...I doubt it since I have always been like this but it increased even more this year when I began high school. It's like middle school...but with MORE idiotic people...sigh...Can't wait till film school.

Yeah, I think Catcher just allowed me to be okay with my cynical side.

High school worse than middle? I'm a junior in high school, and while it's not the best place, I always felt that people were more desperate in middle school.
