i've mentioned earlier in the "reading currently" thread that i was reading "the life of a storyteller" by judith thruman, which is isak dinesen/karen blixen's biography.

i love the book, it's absolutely fab. i came across it during my "out of africa" mania (which is still raging, mind you), and cannot put it down since. i actually try to read as little as possible, because i'm scared i might finish it, and whatever would i do then? :) isak dinesen had such a fascinating life...

anyways, the reason i started this thread (i looked around, but couldn't see a thread only for biographies) is that i was wondering about biographies... i mean... we read about these ppl, and their lives, and we get a glimpse of who they were. i find it absolutely fascinating, especially since a biography is not "based" on a person's life, but is, at least, idealy, an exact accound of it. i find it amazingly cool that the lives of these ppl read so fascinating, even more interesting than a fiction novel.

and, on some level, if i really come to think of if, all our lives are interesting, regardless of the fact that we never "had a farm in africa".

so... once i finish this (nooooo...) any other good biography recommendations?
____________

One that has been mentioned on currently reading is Hollywood Animal by Joe Esterhaz.

Another one I enjoyed is Tender at the Bone by Ruth Reichl.

Mia Farrow's What Falls Away is a great tour of the 60s and 70s. And then there are also the parallels to Lolita.

Roman Polanski's autobiography is one of the greatest books I've ever read. It's amazing.
------------------

I think I've decided that this will be the summer of biographies... I've already started reading a Bowie bio, but its sadly not very good, its little more than a discography with notes on whatever was going on legally in his life... I want to know what makes the man tick, so I'm disappointed

Yeah? What's the deal with that one, EC?

How much am I gonna hate him? Or, how often am I going to say, "You WOULD say that, it's YOUR biography! :rolleyes "

Never been a big fan. But I'm trying to learn how to value his work. He's by far the toughest read for me.

Really? It's more of a journal, though... So...

I loved it. But I love him.

(lady, I met Gloria Steinem the other night - did I mention that yet?)

( :eek YOU DID NOT! Oh, my goodness. Please tell me you told her that I love her.)

How funny that she and Hemingway are in the same post. Ha!

(I did, too! Not tell her that you loved her. But I did say "thank you" after she gave her speech [i was in charge of making sure she was okay], and when said it, I meant "thank you for everything", but I don't think she got that... She was feeling down because she didn't think it'd gone over very well. But she was wrong. I said "Why, because they didn't laugh as loud as they did at the raunchy comediens?" She said "Well, yes..." I said, "But, you have to understand, they still loved it, but it's... well, it's ... it's you." And she stopped for a sec and said "Yeah, I guess that would be weird." She's awesome. :) )

(You know... the woman who runs some women's org here in the US focused upon reproductive rights is also named Gloria, and Jackee and I were perplexed to hear people referring to her as just Gloria. I'm sorry, but Gloria is Gloria. Not the other one. Lovely as she is, so NOT Gloria. Wow, EmberCat, I would've had misty eyes all night long. She's my queen.) (Like you didn't know that.)

I am currently reading a biography on Jean-Luc Godard called "Godard." (What a peculiar Title) Anyways, it's really awesome and insightful. I love the iddy bitty grits and details.

I just started reading a German book about Jim Jarmusch. It's not really a biography, but rather an essay about all his films, his themes and stuff like that. Pretty interesting so far.
------------------

I love that Godard (A Portrait of an Artist at 70 or something like that is the subtitle) biography, up until he becomes a Marxist. I had to put it down after that...

If you like Truffaut, the biography I mentioned in the currently reading thread is great.
______
