That subject line sounds corny I know, like a line from American beauty, but I was thinking about this -- how some stuff you have to hoard for a time of real need, and not just slap it on as background music.

Yes, great background music can play a part in some things, like films, or parties, or hanging out. Although I don't really believe in background music per se, in life.

So there's a few things I find sublimely gorgeous, and I guess the list keeps changing with time. It includes a lot of classical stuff, and some crossover. Here are a few that come to mind:

-Arvo Paert, Spiegel in Spiegel
- Strauss' 4 last songs "Fruhling"
- One single cut from a Pat Metheny album called "Secret Story". People always call in when it's played on the radio
-"Desperado" as sung by a little girl on that wacky CD, the Langley School projects (see old thread)

What are yours?

I'm not talking favourite songs or music, just ones which are incredible little jewels.

"Butterfruit Tree" by Nick Drake
The Charlie Brown Chritsmas album by the Vince Guaraldi trio (sentimental reasons)

My choices weren't so deep either -- It's just what I know.
I'm a bit embarassed about the Metheny because I usually don't like him -- but even if you're a hater, you have to hear this one track. It's hair-raising for some reason.

I can see why you'd pick the The Charlie Brown album -- so charming but so bittersweet. and yeahm sentimental, too.

I like Vivaldi too even tho he's overplayed. That winter thing is lovely esecialyl is they do the snowflakes really lightly.

Scrapping and yelling. I hated vivaldi when I was in the high school orchestra, but now that I suck at violin again, I can enjoy him. plus I don't hear the largo movement of winter very often, just the faster movements.
oh yeah, and I met pat metheny at the national guitar workshop. this guy was really funny, kinda bitter but really cool. he was all that cooler when he laughed at my cover of "can you feel the love tonight." one of the few occasions in my life where I felt good about myself.

Pete you should feel great about yourself. Look at all of the fun things you do. You're a do-er!

I, too, love Vivaldi's Winter
Beethoven's Violin Concerto - kills me
Candles in the Rain - Melanie
any kind of harmonized (or dissonant, even) chanting
Obiero by I can't remember, and can't find the damn cd...

Dude, I totally got one of his guitar picks from a roadie during the imaginary day tour. Fuckin' A. (But seriously, I've seen him twice, once on the Seattle waterfront, and I was in the second row. Great time.)

sadly, when I met him I had no idea who he was, only that he was a big deal and all the other camp instructors were talking about it.

That's not embarrassing, maxie. THIS is embarassing:

I heard Dream Weaver on my way home the other day and got a little choked-up during one of the choruseseses. :o

It's the way he sings it. He sounds so stressed out.

But it's not an addition to this list, please don't think I'm going there. Although, I do like it. Uh-oh, new thread in OT.

"I'm losing my fucking mind. Use contractions, goddammit. You sound like an alien." - Dave Eggers
