I noticed in the latest EW mag. there's a centerfold-out with The Great American Indie Quiz sponsored by Pop Secret microwave popcorn. A Rushmore related question is #26 of 30. Pretty simple for all of us here.

In Rushmore, Max Fischer (Jason Schwartzman) was given two pins at school. For what achievements did he earn this recognition?

Rushmore #24 on EW's list of top 50 high school movies:
For some reason, Rushmore doesn't quite feel like a high school movie. Maybe that's because director/co-writer Wes Anderson's wonderful comedy doesn't feel like any other movie ever made. But it's about school days: Just the fact that Jason Schwartzman's tirelessly enterprising Max Fischer is a student at all becomes palpably bittersweet, since he's too young to ever win Olivia Williams, the teacher of his (and anyone's) dreams.

The writer of the "Christmas Party" episode of the US version of the office says in the commentary that he emmulated the Rushmore part scene after Max's play, in his office christmas party scene. Not really media, but a mention none the less.

Loraxeon, I just listened to that commentary last night, and I did that flappy thing with my hands I was so excited to hear the writer say that. (Mike Schurr? I think it was him.) I love it when my obsessions collide.

"I saved Latin. What did you ever do?" is the latest nominee in political blogger Andrew Sullivan's "Best Movie Line Ever" series.

/Film has chosen Rushmore as one of the Ten Most Influential Films of the Last Ten Years.

Quote:
Rushmore is on the list for stamping Wes Anderson’s style, in its most successful form, onto the broad pop culture. I see its influence everywhere – indeed, even Wes Anderson himself has turned out a few examples of Rushmore pastiche. Irrelevantly, it was also the last Wes Anderson film I liked. In fact, I loved it. And before you bite my hand off because you have Rushmore pegged as a ’98 release, let me remind you that I’m in England and we didn’t get it until late ’99.

And I saw that, and as great as that is, I must say, one of their choices "Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow" pretty much loses my interest in that top ten.

Right off the bat it's a mess: on what planet was Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow influential? Nobody saw it. Hell, you could argue that the movie almost set back the 'green screen mania' that Slashfilm attributes to it. This choice is a classic example of a writer simply not understanding what 'influential' means. Maybe we'll look back at Sky Captain and see it as a milestone but unless it is rediscovered in a major way (which it frankly won't be), Sky Captain has zero influence. This isn't about the film's quality. but simply about the film's impact: none. If you want the 'green screen mania' film, you use Sin City, a movie that was a hit, that has been stylistically and functionally copied again and again since release and a movie that people saw.

I think he makes a good point, and I considered not even posting the list here because it's not of the best quality, but I did indeed see Sky Captain and enjoyed it quite a bit. (Though admittedly besides my friend and I, there were about six other people in the theater, most of which were teenage girls who hated it. This as on opening night, too.)

I wouldn't even say Rushmore was the most influential of Anderson's films. The Royal Tenenbaums made nearly triple the amount Rushmore did in theaters and the style of that film has been imitated the most, I think.

Just because Sky Captain uses a whole new form of media, doesn't make it a mile stone in filmmaking to me. I mean, Star Wars Episode II was more than 60% green screen. I think a film like that brings more light to my eye on the influential part (even though in my opinion, attack of the clones is the worst in the saga). But then you get movies like Sin City and 300 who bring the idea to it's glory. Also, don't watch The Spirit. It's horrible.

I think that you are probably right that Tenenbaums is probably his most influential film, aesthetically anyway. I still contend that Rushmore is his best.

I haven't seen Sky Captain. I merely shared the link in response to Herman's comment. Is it worth adding to the Netflix queue?

There's a great Tumblr that does like these living gifs from movies, they've done Scorsese, Lynch, a bunch of people. They posted this today.
