The year is almost half over and I thought it'd be interesting to see what movies have stuck with people so far. My list is short, but all good. (In order:)

I haven't been able to see as many movies as I would have liked so far this year, and that trend appears to be continuing, but my current top 3 are in your list...Zodiac, Hot Fuzz, Death Proof.

Also, I forgot "Syndromes and a Century" and "I'm a Cyborg, But That's Ok." I don't think either of them have come out in any signifigant way in this country yet, but they'll probably be on dvd at some point.

dunno why i even bothered to get my lazy ass going to see the last two, which were basically cinematic disasters. i somehow managed to sit through "dreamgirls" because it looked nice, but afterwards i hated it. and "deja vu" should not be mentioned at all. nowhere.
"zodiac" was brilliant (the ending with donovan's 'hurdy gurdy man' was pricless), really brilliant. "inland empire" was great, but really fucked up. "death proof" was a fun ride.

Was 'Knocked Up' really any good? I kind of (emphasis on 'kind of') liked 'The 40 Year Old Virgin' but the plot of this movie seems genuinely un- original. I guess I shouldn't judge before I see it.

Anyhow, Paul Feig was the real genius behind 'Freaks and Geeks' Where'd he go?

Besides his cameo in Knocked Up, Paul Feig has been directing (episodes of Arrested Development, Weeds, The Office, etc, plus the movie Unaccompanied Minors - which looked bad, but was based on an episode of This American Life, so I might check it out). He also has written a couple books: Kick Me, and Superstud: Or How I Became a 24-Year-Old Virgin.
As for Knocked Up, I wasn't totally enamored with the 40-Year-Old Virgin, but was quite pleasantly surprised with Knocked Up. Beneath all the jokes, it had a lot of the humanity and sincerity that I loved about Freaks and Geeks.

I've seen Knocked Up twice, and it held up quite well. I might even have enjoyed it more the second time.

This has been a pretty terrible year for film in my opinion. I really liked 'Grindhouse' though.

Tarantino is reliable. Everything he does is up to a consistant standard, which is why I respect him. His dialogue is pretty attrotious, and his characters are un- interesting, but he is a great action director, and really captures immediacy well in his scenes. I guess what it comes down to is I think he's a much better director than writer, but he's an extremely distinct writer if nothing else.

'Grindhouse' was cool. I liked Tarantino's film better than Romiro's, but they were both good.

Highwaters: it's The Passion of Joan of Arc, by Carl Dreyer. Early 1930s, I think. The Criterion DVD is the fantastic; watch it with the new music written for it (the dvd gives you the option of watching it silent or with the music - the director never specified that any particular music had to accompany it).

romiro? seems like a weird mutant cross from robert de niro and george romero. the dude who directed "planet terror" is rodriguez, one of the worst directors working.

Ha ha, yea I know it's Rodriguez. I don't know what made me think of Romiro. I really don't think he's bad. I've only seen the stuff he's done with Tarantino though.
