Hey y'all. Just flipped on the old IFC and happened upon a film from 1999 called Minus Man, starring Owen, Brian Cox, Jeaneane, Dwight Yoakam. Anyone seen it yet? Just started, so I'm gonna go immerse myself...weee!

Yep, I saw it a long time ago, and only once.

Liked the camera work there. And the cords. So stylish :)

I thought it was just a touch weird, but it was pretty good. I thought the casting of the female roles was right on, and that Owen did a decent job. It was odd to see him so mellow. And freakish. I'm used to goofy, not so much freakish.

He was like Alec Baldwin's "God complex" character, only more baked than tanked.

That part with Janeane near the end made my hair stand up on end. You know the part? (I don't want to spoil.) Yikes.

I have this on DVD. I don't watch it over and over but it's pretty cool. I love Dwight Yoakam and Dennis Haysbert as the detectives. Brian Cox is strange but he is cool too.I had to get this because of Owen. And he drives a cool truck.

It was pretty good. I'm trying to remember specific quotes and I can't ... it's been a whole day, fa chrissakes. But there were some Owenistic gems in there. And how lame is this, but I went to IMDB and checked up on quotes:

Quote:
Some people die in less than a minute, others it takes ten. I guess it's what they call metabolic. If it wasn't closed, I'd go to the library and get clear on this.

"Get clear on this." heh

I can't remember a single thing he says in that movie! And I forgot Brian Cox played the dad/husband!

This movie is all coming back to me now. I forgot Dwight was in it, too. I can see the ending, and I'm all weirded out again. Poor schmuck.

That wasn't vague enough for you, was it? See it. Lots of poor schmucks in this one.

Shoeshine!

Girl! You know, I didn't think Sheryl Cheryl whichever Crow did a bad job or anything. Can't say it was memorable, just that she was there. I think they met on the set, didn't they? (Like I know. :rolleyes I just remember hearing they were seeing each other ... after the movie got a little attention.)

But I do remember guessing that she wore her own jacket for some reason. And I think I was laughing when I guessed that. It was a leather fringie thing, wasn't it?

Man, I need to see this one again.

Do you know that Minus Man was a festival darling?

Nominated for Grand Special Prize at Deauville (a biggy!).
Won a Special Grand Prize in Montreal and was also nominated there in Americas category.
Nominated for Grand Jury Prize at Sundance (wow!).

i finally saw it last week, taped from cable. i can see why it flopped and why critics liked it. And ample of Owen on screen, like 99% of the time camera follows him.

Yes, HJ, I did know that! :)

That Sundance batch in 99 was a pretty good group of finalists, many of which won some mainstream attention:

Judy Berlin, Adventures of Sebastian Cole, Guinevere, and Happy, Texas, and Tumbleweeds all competed that year.

Also, F. Whaley's 'Joe the King,' which I loved, but around 16 people in the country went to see, excluding the group at Sundance. It opened and closed in LA and NY within 2 weeks.

Also a good year for Sundance because three of the dramatic features in competition were directed by women. Sweet.

But I can't remember who won that year. Hm. It wasn't anyone I mentioned.

No, but I work for a guy who goes every year. I do research on a lot of the indie directors for him. Guess when I started working for him - that's right! 99! :) Those people are sort of burned on my brain now.

Everybody keeps asking him, "Can't she just, like, come along and, like, carry your computer?" And he's all, "No." :( Boooo. Ah, it's not in the budget, I know...I know.

I like Mercedes. She's so cool. Very different from other actresses. She was great in MM.

I, too, loved this movie. Watched it just recently. Dwight Yoakam has always been a favorite of mine, not necessariyly as an actor, but as a singer. Although, he does a good job acting, too. Has made good "crossing over."

Had a hard time finding MM at the library and/or video stores. It's a shame, cuz it's a good one.
