The relationship between Anthony and Inez was one of the key story points to be augmented from the short film. Anderson notes that much of what the character Inez became can be attributed to the artist playing her: "Inez became so much more developed when Lumi showed up. Because she speaks Spanish and Anthony doesn't, she doesn't speak much and her personality depends so much on the kind of reactions she has. You instantly sense that Inez is an intelligent and good person. A lot of that is due to the way Lumi played her and what she brought to the character."

About Lumi Cavazos...
A graduate of the Centro Universitario de Teatro at Mexico's National University, Lumi Caazos  most recently [recently, as in around the time of the release of Bottle Rocket] starred as the spirited Tita, a woman who was born in the kitchen and whose ability to transmit her passion through her cooking transforms a family destiny, in the critically-acclaimed film Like Water For Chocolate.

Cavazos previously starred in several critically acclaimed Mexican theater productions, including La Paison de Pentesilea, Schools of Wives, and a production of Kafka's Metamorphosis. She made her film debut in 1989 in Bussy Cortes' El Secreto de Romelia. She... won the Best Actress prize at the Tokyo International Film Festival for her portrayal of Tita.
