Rita, Karan says, is a "very intelligent, self-posessed girl who is a
bit too smart for this job of waiting tables and doing daily chores...
[but] sees the brothers as a gateway toward a more exciting possibility
in life." The brothers are as exotic to her as India is to them.
"In terms of what is expected of an Indian actress, my role may
surprise some people... She lives outside the box but she is not a
shallow character."

About Amara Karan...
The London-born daughter of Sri Lankan parents,
Amara Karan studied political science and finance at Oxford University
before giving up a budding career as an investment banker to work on a
stage career. "Acting seemed to be my destiny," she says of her
enrollment in a London drama school. She produced a short film
called By Myself. The Darjeeling Limited is her first film.
