Wes Anderson was drawn to India by Jean Renoir's The River and the films of Satyajit Ray, the music of which is featured prominently in the film.

The train is a cross-pollination of "actual Indian trains... luxury trans-world trains such as the  Orient Express... contemporary Euro transit trains... and the 20th Century Limited."  (press kit, Friedberg)

"We blended Rajsathan-style patterns and the color schemeof Indian railways with a sort of modern Art deco style." (press kit, Friedberg)

The convent is, in part, based on the nunnery in Black Narcissus (1947).
