The Belafonte (gallery)

According  to a recent owner of the ship, the vessel was a minesweeper commissioned as HMS Packington by the British Navy and built by Harland and Wolffe.  She was launched on July 3, 1958 but was sold to the South African Navy in 1959. Her name was changed to SAS Walvisbaai. She was retired in 2001 and purchased from the South African Navy by the Walt Disney Company for the production of The Life Aquatic in July 2003.  She was sailed from Cape Town, South Africa, to Gibraltar (U.K.) for conversion and continued on to Naples, Italy for filming. She was most recently docked at Malta before sailing for Dubai c. December 2005. She is 150 feet long and 23 feet wide.
